A game changer for the business

“We are saving at least $10,000 a year, probably more,” says Brett Evans, CFO, Service and Office Manager for Alpha & Omega. “In the car repair business, there’s a rule of thumb: for every $10 in expenses, you have to do $100 in gross sales. Customer reaction

Since starting the Cash Discount Program, Brett reports that “pretty much everyone, a majority and it’s a high majority, are completely cool with it.” While Alpha & Omega are never willing to lose a sale over the credit card processing fee — and they are able to override it in their system for any customer at any time — Brett says that most of his customers, who are business owners themselves, recognize it as a cost of doing business and even admit they do something similar.

“We’ve only had one customer tell us they just don’t like it. But after we told him the options and set his expectations, he’s returned four times with no more complaints.”

In order to prepare customers, Brett always quotes his customers a price with the credit card processing fee included before their service. Once the job is done he lets them know they can save by paying in cash, although he says most of the time they’ve already noticed the signs outlining the program around the lobby. 

But what if the customer doesn’t have cash or their checkbook on them right then? “We let them send us a check in the mail,” says Brett. 

“It creates a circle of trust, and a feeling of community,” Brett says. “When we do that, it makes our customers feel like we’re not just watching every nickel and dime. Those moments of trust completely outweigh all our other efforts to make sure our customers are comfortable and get us past the one awkward sentence about credit card fees.” 

And thanks to the Cash Discount Program, Alpha & Omega has seen a huge uptick in the amount of customers paying with cash. “I now deposit several dozen checks a week, and we haven’t had one returned yet in the year and a half we’ve had the program,” says Brett. “I’d say our card payments have decreased by around 35 percent.”

Brett says another advantage of his new Poynt system is its ability to work off WiFi from anywhere. “We hosted a car show and fundraiser, and we had to keep walking inside to sell products with our old system,” says Brett. “This system is completely mobile as long as I have WiFi. That hardware feature was a big plus.”
